Year five Zone

Welcome to Year 5. Years Five & Six are known as the 'Upper Key Stage 2'  and these are the oldest two years in our school

As with other year groups, most the children's work is covered through the topics (see below), though some areas of the curriculum are often taught discretely. Currently these are:

  • Music
  • R.E.
  • P.E.
  • other subjects may vary from term to term

We operate a 2 year rolling programme of topics which are shared with Year Six, so your child will cover all of the topics shown below, but which topics they cover in each year group will depend upon where in the cycle we are:

Our topics (shared with Year 6) are…

As young adults, we wish the children to develop even greater independence and more responsibility, so we give them many opportunities to demonstrate this. For example, our older children may be chosen to be:

  • Playground buddies
  • Library monitors
  • Lunchtime helpers
  • Support for younger children
  • Other monitor roles

We also have Break-Out areas for the older children, where small groups are allowed to spend agreed times without direct supervision. By giving the children the opportunity to demonstrate that they can be mature, sensible and trusted, we hope that they will develop a better understanding their responsibilities as young adults.

In Year 5 we take the children swimming again, as we did in Year 3. This will be for one term, usually in the autumn.
